Two teenagers detained for stoning train in Khulna

Police in Khulna have detained two madrasa students on Friday for throwing stones at a moving train that struck the engine driver.

Shamimul Hossain Siam, 14, and Sazzad Sheikh 13, were detained from Jogipol Adarsha Noorania Hafizia Madrasa, said OC Mollah Khabir Ahmed of the Khulna Railway Police.

“Siam and Sazzad, along with other students of the madrasa, threw stones at the Benapole-bound Betna Express train at 7am. Some of the stones hit the engine driver’s face and mouth, and he immediately stopped the train,” he added.

The detainees, however, claim that they were not stoning the train.

“We were hurling stones at dogs fighting on the street, and one of the stones may have hit the train which was passing by,” Sazzad said.

Railway police’s Superintendent Rabiul Hasan said people consider trains as a safe travel system. Khulna has not experienced such an incident in the past few months.

“However, since last month, we have received several reports of this kind.”
