The body of “Banglar Samriddhi” ship’s third engineer Mohammad Hadisur Rahman, killed in a Russian missile attack on a Ukrainian port, is being taken to Romania.
A freezer van carrying Hadisur's body left for Moldova at 11:30am Bangladesh time on Friday, confirmed Bangladesh Merchant Marine Officers Association (BMMOA) General Secretary Sakhawat Hossain.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam in a Facebook post on Friday said: “The body of Hadisur Rahman has arrived in Moldova from Ukraine and will reach Bucharest, the capital of Romania, by morning.”
He added that the body would arrive in Bangladesh by March 13 or 14 after completing necessary procedures in Bucharest.
According to Bangladesh Ambassador to Romania Md Daud Ali, Hadisur’s body would have been taken to Romania on Thursday had his family given the consent.
The ship got stuck at Ukraine’s Port Alvia with 29 crew members when Russia started invading its European neighbour last month.
On March 2, Hadisur Rahman was killed when a Russian missile struck the ship.
On March 5, the rest 28 sailors left the bunker (shelter house) adjacent to the port and set sail for Moldova.
The next day, they crossed the border reached Romania at noon.
On Wednesday, the 28 sailors returned to Dhaka from Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight from Bucharest Airport in Romania.
