Crops in several upazilas under Kurigram and Thakurgaon were damaged by a nor’wester and hailstorm that hit the districts on Friday afternoon.
Heavy rains with gusty wind lashed parts of Kathalbari Union Parishad under the Sadar Upazila and different areas under Phulbari, Nageshwari and Bhurungamari upazilas of Kurigram uprooting trees and tin-shed houses.
Local people said that their crops were damaged in the hailstorm and tree branches fell around houses dangerously.
Meanwhile, a number of trees were uprooted in the storm in Kathalbari area. Several shops and houses were also damaged in the storm, local people said.
A local trader, Russel, told the media that his shop in the grocery market was badly damaged by the storm.
Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Rajarhat weather observatory station, said that rain might occur in the district on Saturday as well.
Meanwhile, an unprecedented hailstorm damaged crops in Thakurgaon as well.
Following the storm on Friday, several roads and houses were covered by a thick layer of ice in the district, local people said.
Abu Hossain, district agricultural extension department assistant director, said that they were trying to determine the losses incurred by farmers due to the storm.
