A man was beaten to death by his neighbours in Sylhet's Dakshin Surma Upazila over a land dispute on Friday.
Deceased Shahabuddin Ahmed Sabul, 45, was an autorickshaw driver. He hails from Kuchai Purbapara village of Moglabazar area of the upazila.
Five people – Kamrul, Badrul, Malai, Munni and Fahima – have been detained following the incident.
According to police, Badrul, Malai, Nazrul and Fakhrul, sons of one Moyna Miah, had a dispute with Sabul over a piece of land.
On Friday morning, Sabul went to cut down a tree in front of his house when Badrul and his brothers approached and engaged in a quarrel with him. At one point, they started beating Sabul which left him seriously injured.
Sabul was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical Hospital where a duty doctor declared him dead.
Shefali Begum, wife of the deceased, said: "My husband was cutting down a tree that he had planted. Still, they beat him to death."
Shamsuddoha, officer-in-charge (OC) of Moglabazar police station, said that they had detained five people over the incident and also recovered two machetes, iron rods and an axe from the spot.
The body was sent to morgue for an autopsy.
