Trawler capsize at Bay: Bodies of two fishermen recovered

The coast guard has recovered the bodies of two fishermen who went missing after a trawler sank in the Bay of Bengal during a storm early Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Mamun Sheikh, 40, and Ismail Hossain, 30.

Lieutenant Commander Abdur Rahman (Media officer), of Bangladesh Coast Guard headquarters, confirmed the matter.

Earlier in the day, the coast guard rescued three fishermen after 18 trawlers sank in the Bay of Bengal.

100 fishermen managed to swim ashore or were rescued by other fishermen during the storm at 5am, reports UNB.

The rescued fishermen are Abdullah, and Yakub Ali from Rampal Upazila and Raju Sheikh, from Mongla Upazila in Bagerhat, said Abdur Rahman.

They were rescued during a search operation conducted by Dublar Char outpost of Coast Guard and were given primary medications, he said.

According to people familiar with the matter, nearly 30,000 fishermen came to Dubla to process dry fish last November and had been living there since then.

Earlier, Pralad Chandra Roy, in-charge of Dublarchar Forest Camp in the eastern parts of the Sundarbans, said a sudden rainstorm hit the area around 10pm on Friday.

Ten fishing trawlers sank within 8 kilometers of Dublar Char and 8 fishing trawlers capsized in different areas of the Bay of Bengal, 45 kilometers off Dublar Char.

He also said that a large quantity of dried fish worth Tk2 crore were damaged during the storm.

Belayet Hossain, divisional officer of the Sundarbans East Forest Division, said most of the fishermen in the trawlers swam to safety except a few.

The bodies of the slain fishermen will be handed over to their families, he added.
