The authorities at Gazipur’s Bangabandhu Safari Park have reported the deaths of two zebras on Saturday, taking the number of dead black-and-white striped mammals at the park to 11 this month.
The Zebras fell ill on Saturday morning and died later in the day, said Jahidul Kabir, project director of the park.
Previously, nine zebras died in the 22 days between January 2 and 25.
Five died in various bacterial attacks from January 2-20, while four died fighting among themselves, according to Shahidullah, a member of the probe body formed on January 25 to probe into the zebra deaths.
The panel also made some recommendations to prevent further deaths in zebras at the park.
Its suggestions include disinfecting the zebra habitat by sprinkling bleaching powder, changing the water in the park's reservoir, vaccinating the zebras, providing mature grass as zebra food, disinfecting dry food before serving it and tightening security.
Last year, black and white stripes took over Gazipur Safari Park with the arrival of new zebra foals, as the breeding season began.
The total number of zebras in the park was 31, and of them, 15 were males and 16 were females.
