Fire at Narayanganj RMG factory doused after 5 hours

A fire that broke out at an export-oriented garment factory in Bandar of Narayanganj on Friday, has been brought under control after around five hours.

The fire erupted on the second floor of a three-storey building at Zaheen Knitwears Ltd, located in Madanpur area, at around 4:30pm.

Abdullah Al Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj Fire and Civil Defense, confirmed the matter.

He said 19 units of the fire service have worked together to douse the fire.

No casualties have been reported so far.

Jamal Uddin, managing director of the factory, said: “The factory is run according to all the rules and measures. Adequate fire safety equipment was also in stock.”

"If there were workers present on the scene, I would not have suffered so much. a large consignment of products was ready for Saturday’s shipment," he added.

Factory Director Shahriar Chowdhury said that it was not possible to determine the damage right now.

According to the garment workers, the three-storey building is a fully-fledged garment factory. Fabrics were stored on the second floor. There were no workers inside as it was Friday. 

Suddenly in the afternoon, they saw smoke coming out of the factory. By then, the fire had spread to the second floor. 

Upon receiving the information, the Fire Service started working around 5pm.

The fire official said the cause of the fire could not be known immediately. “An investigation will reveal further details.”

Meanwhile, the fire disrupted vehicular movement on a few kilometres of the Dhaka-Chittagong highway until 9pm.
