Law Minister: NID gaffes due to lack of skilled manpower

The initial mistakes rampant in the National Identity Cards (NID) is due to lack of skilled manpower, says Law Minister Anisul Huq.

“Most of them are spelling mistakes,” he said while responding to a question from Jatiya Party lawmaker Shamim Haider Patwary during the Parliamentary session on Thursday.

According to the minister, the voter database was built in 2007-08 after collecting information through the biometric system.

After that, the Election Commission gave opportunities to make corrections, but many did not take it up, according to Huq.

Starting from 2012, all voter information has been stored centrally which has led to reduced mistakes in the NIDs, he said.

“However, most of the appeals for corrections are not valid. Many documents need to be re-investigated to dispose of these appeals, which takes time,” he added.

The minister said that in order to speed up the process, the government has launched an online cards management system where people can apply for corrections from their home at (www.services.nidw.gov.bd).

Moreover, the NID services have been decentralized, he said, adding that the database upgrade has made it possible to provide continuous service in this regard.
