Job seekers block Dhaka street to demand increase in age limit for govt job

Job seekers under the banner of Sarbadaliya Chhatra Oikya Parishad blocked the capital’s Nilkhet intersection in demonstration demanding extension of the age limit to apply for government jobs on Sunday.

Police asked them to leave the place when they gathered there at 10.30 am to press home their various demands, said Officer-in- Charge (OC) of New  Market police station Sam Qayyum.

As the job seekers did not move, police chased them and charged batons to disperse them.

"The government has imposed restrictions on any kind of gathering and rallies to contain the spread of Covid-19,” said the OC.

"However, we gave them 45 minutes to leave the road but they didn’t listen to us. So, we were forced to take action to reduce the sufferings of people" he added.

Being dispersed by police from Nilkhet intersection, they demonstrated another rally at the foot of Raju sculpture at Dhaka University’s TSC area.

The protesters’ other demands are: stopping corruption in the government’s recruitment process, and making public the scores of both preliminary and written tests,  reducing application fees for all jobs and stopping taking more than one recruitment test in a day.
