Tangail man gets death penalty for killing wife over dowry

A Tangail court has given a man the death penalty for killing his wife over dowry.

Judge Khaleda Yeasmin of Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Thursday.

The convict is Shahadat Hossain of Chaubaria village of Tangail Sadar upazila.

Shahadat was tried in absentia as he has been on the run since securing bail following his arrest over the murder.

Shahadat had started demanding Tk10,000 in dowry three-four months after getting married to Zahara Khatun of Aultia village of the same upazila in 2002, said Public Prosecutor Ali Ahmed.

Shahadat used to torture Zahara as her family could not meet his demand, Ali added.

On September 6, 2002, Shahadat, along with Zahara, went to his in-laws’ home, and Zahara's family found her body floating in a pond near the house the next morning, said the public prosecutor.

Police later recovered the body and found several wounds on it, he added.

Afterwards, Yunus Ali, brother of the deceased, filed a case in this connection with Tangail Sadar police station under the Women and Child Repression Prevention Act.
