RAB: Rohingya man held with 500,000 Yaba pills in Cox’s Bazar

The Rapid Action Battalion says it has detained a Rohingya man with a large consignment of contraband Yaba.

Saidul Amin, 23, was held late on Sunday from Ukhiya Upazila in possession of 500,000 pills of the methamphetamine-based drug , Assistant Superintendent  Abu Salam Chowdhury of RAB told a media call on Monday.

Based on a tip-off, a raid was conducted at the Balukhali area when Saidul tried to flee leaving behind a sack, according to the RAB officer.

The suspect has confessed to being involved in drug smuggling, said Chowdhury before adding he will be turned over to the local police.

Yaba is usually smuggled into Bangladesh through 45 routes of Cox’s Bazar district, bordering Myanmar’s Rakhine state, according to intelligence agencies.

Myanmar is infamous for producing vast quantities of Yaba, opium and cannabis.

Drug trafficking has emerged as a problem in Rakhine and an illicit drug trade has flourished in the region due to its mountainous land and porous border.
