4 deaths in Bogra: Case lodged against 300 villagers

A case has been filed against 300 unidentified villagers on charges of assault, vandalism, attempted snatching of ballot papers and creating obstruction to government work at Baliadighi union polling station in Bogra’s Gabtoli upazila.

Upazila Presiding Officer Zakir Hossain filed the case with Gabtoli police station on Thursday night.

Officer-in-Charge Zia Latiful Islam confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Friday.

According to the case, more than 300 unidentified men and women vandalized the polling booths during the counting on Wednesday.

When the situation got out of control, BGB members fired 31 rounds by the direction of the on-duty Magistrate Shakil Ahmed. Four villagers, including a woman, were killed in the incident.

Chilimpur Medical police outpost SI Shamim Hossain said six people were being treated at Bogra Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital, including three who were shot.

OC Zia said subject to the investigation, legal action would be taken in the case against those involved.

Besides, Superintendent of police Sudip Kumar Chakraborty on Thursday night formed a three-member inquiry committee headed by Additional Superintendent of police Ali Haider Chowdhury. The committee has been asked to submit a report within the next seven working days.

Meanwhile, locals have demanded that the magistrate be punished in connection with the deaths of four people, alleging that he had ordered gunshots on the ruling party supporters to favor the BNP-backed candidate.
