Four people sustained gunshot wounds and at least 15 others were injured in an incident of violence in Satkhira, a day after the Union Parishad (UP) election.
The incident was reported from Khajra union of Assasuni upazila on Thursday, said police.
Additional forces have been deployed following the incident, said OC Golam Kabir of Assasuni police station.
UP chairman-elect Shahnewaz Dalim claimed that his rival candidate Ohidul Islam opened fire and threw brickbats on them from his home when they were passing by.
Islam, however, dismissed the allegations and said that he fired in self defence as Dalim and his supporters launched an attack on his home.
“I had to open fire from my licensed shotgun as they were about to break and enter through the front gate,” he said.
At least 15 people were taken to the Assasuni Upazila Health Complex and Satkhira Sadar Hospital.
