The supporters of a ruling Awami League-backed candidate in Tangail’s Basail upazila snatched around 400 ballots from a polling centre during the union parishad elections on Wednesday.
Voting was suspended following the incident that took place at Joshihati Govt High School under Fulki union around 11am.
Later, members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) brought the situation under control.
Locals say some people entered the centre forcibly, snatched the ballot papers and started casting votes. They took away four ballot books, each carrying 100 ballots.
Presiding Officer Sajedul Alam said that they had suspended voting following a chaos outside the centre. At that time, some people entered the centre and snatched the ballot papers.
Out of fear, the election officials and polling agents took shelter in another room and were later freed by the RAB personnel.
Upazila Returning Officer Moni Shankar Roy said that they were working to recover the ballot books.
