The overall flood situation in Bogra’s Sariakandi deteriorated further on Wednesday as the water level of the Jamuna River continued to swell due to incessant rains.
Thousands of people have been marooned as floodwater entered homes and educational institutions, and submerged croplands. People started to move to nearby shelters.
Water Development Board Executive Engineer Mahbubur Rahman and local sources said in the last 24 hours till Wednesday noon, the Jamuna water level rose by 10cm and was flowing 56cm above the danger mark at Mathurapara point in Sariakandi.

According to the Upazila Agriculture Office, a total of 109 hectares of cropland including Aman paddy fields have gone underwater.
The Upazila Education Office says the floodwater has entered into 23 government primary schools.
Upazila Project Implementation Officer Saiful Islam said: “Around 50,800 people from 68 villages under Sariakandi Sadar, Hatsherpur, Kajla, Chaluabari, Karnibari, Bohail, Kutubpur, Chandanbaisha and Kamalpur unions have been trapped due to the flood.”
In the meantime, the official said, some 48 tons of rice was distributed among the flood-affected families. “More reliefs will be given,” he added.
