Police in Sylhet have detained a state-run orphanage’s staffer over the death of an infant.
Sultana Ferdousi Siddiqa, a nanny at the Chhotomoni Nibas run by the Department of Social Services, was detained on Thursday after investigators went through CCTV footage of the facility, said the police.
Footage from July 22 showed that Sultana threw the crying infant out of its bed before suffocating the child to death with a pillow, said OC SM Abu Farhad of Sylhet’s Kotwali police station.
“The infant was taken to the MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital the same day, when the doctors declared the child dead,” he said.
Following an inquest report in the presence of a magistrate the next day, the child was buried. On July 24, the orphanage filed an unnatural death case, said the police officer.
“However, evidences show that it’s a homicide. The police will start a murder case against the nanny, if the social services department doesn’t,” said OC Farhad.
