NGO’s negligence leads to arrest of mother of infant in Gazipur

A mother of a six-month-old had been arrested in Gazipur’s Sreepur upazila as an NGO did not withdraw the case against her even after she repaid the loan she had taken.

Police arrested Shahnaz Parveen from her house in Bartopa village under Mawna union on Monday afternoon, confirmed Sreepur police station Officer-in-Charge Mahfuz Imtiaz Bhuiyan.

She was later released on Tuesday after being produced in the court of Gazipur Judicial Magistrate Nazmunnahar.

Confirming the matter Gazipur court inspector Md Monirul Islam said after repaying the loan Shahnaz should have appealed to the court, but she did not do that. That is why she was summoned to the court.

Shahnaz had taken a loan of Tk1 lakh from Thengamara Mahila Sabuj Sangha (TMSS) in 2017 for business and domestic needs, her husband Nurul Amin said.

They were paying the instalments regularly but failed to pay the last two instalments on time due to financial insolvency caused by the Covid-19 situation.

Later, under pressure from the NGO officials, they managed to pay the dues and received a no-claim certificate from the NGO.

“However, we did not know that a case was filed against us. No one gave us any documents or told us about it. On Monday, police came and arrested my wife,” said Nurul Amin.

When contacted, TMSS Sreepur-1 Branch Manager Abdul Alim said that they currently did not have any member named Shahnaz Parveen.

He also claimed that no case had been filed against any member named Shahnaz Parveen since he joined the branch.

OC Mahfuz Imtiaz Bhuiyan said that the NGO did not withdraw the case after receiving the dues, resulting in a court warrant against her.

For that warrant, Shahnaz was arrested with her six-month-old child. “The process of sending her to court is underway,” he told Dhaka Tribune.
