Four people were killed and 30 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur on Wednesday.
The accident occurred when a bus from Dhaka and another bus from Dinajpur collided head-on near the upazila parishad office on the Dhaka-Dinajpur Highway around 2pm, confirmed Sub-Inspector Nuruzzaman, in charge of the Ikarchali highway police outpost.
Highway and Taraganj Thana police and personnel from Taraganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Station rushed to the spot, rescued the injured persons and sent them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital and Taraganj Upazila Health Complex.
“Five of the 30 injured are in critical condition at Rangpur Medical College Hospital,” said Dr Polash of the hospital, adding that most of the injured were released after providing primary treatments.
Ashraf Ali, one of the injured passengers from Dhaka, said the bus driver handed over the vehicle to his assistant following the lunch break in Bogra.
“The driver’s assistant was driving recklessly and the accident took place as he could not control the vehicle near Taraganj,” he added.
Identities of the deceased persons could not be known immediately, SI Nuruzzaman said.
The process of filing a case in this connection with the Taraganj police station was in progress, reports BSS.
