Blast at Narayanganj paper mill leaves 4 injured

Four workers sustained burn injuries following an explosion in a paper mill in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj early Monday.

The injured are Moshtaq Ahmed, 48, Md Asaduzzaman, 31, Tafizul Islam, 55 and Md Faruk Hossain, 54; all of whom are security guards at the Al Nur Paper and Board Mills Ltd, located at Kanchpur of the upazila.

Of the injured, Moshtaq with 78% burn injuries, followed by Asaduzzaman with 75% and Tafizul with 68% were admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Bachchu Mia, in-charge of the police outpost at DMCH, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Monday afternoon.

Besides, Faruk, who received 5% burn injuries, was given first aid and has been kept under observation, said SM Aiyub Hossain, resident surgeon of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

“The throats of three victims were burned and their condition is critical,” he said.

According to fire service sources, the fire broke out at the Al Nur Paper and Board Mills in Kanchpur at around 1:30am on Monday after an explosion caused by a leak in the gas pipeline. 

“Informed, two units of Demra fire station reached the spot and brought the fire under control in about half an hour,” said Osman Gani, station officer, Demra Fire Service and Civil Defence.

Hafizur Rahman, CEO of Security Force Limited, said an explosion occurred near the main gate of the mill where the guards were on duty.
