In a tragic heartbreak for a couple, five newborns died soon after the pregnant mother gave birth at a hospital in Gazipur on Monday.
The premature babies -- three boys and two girls -- were born at the Mother Care and General Hospital in Sreepur upazila on Monday evening, but they passed away soon after, said the hospital’s on-duty doctor Abdus Salam Tarek.
The grief-stricken mother, Brishti Aktar, 21, of the district’s Kapsia upazila, told Dhaka Tribune that she went into labour on Sunday night.
Brishti, who was five months (20 weeks) into the pregnancy, was admitted to the hospital under the supervision of Dr Zahirun Nesha Renu around midday on Monday after she started bleeding in the morning.
She said the doctors, after performing an ultrasonogram, had told her that she had three healthy babies in her womb.
However, Dr Tarek said they had informed Brishti about the quintuplets after the ultrasonogram.
While being under the doctors’ supervision, she gave birth to the five babies after 6pm. But the newborns died soon after the delivery.
Dr Tarek said the mother was out of risk and undergoing treatment at the hospital.
