Nagarpur Dhaleshwari Bridge in Tangail in dilapidated state

People are using the Kedarpur bridge in Nagarpur, Tangail with caution as a portion of the approach road has collapsed due to heavy rain.

The bridge, built on the Dhaleshwari River in 2017 at a cost of Tk55 crore, became unusable as potholes developed within a year after it was opened for use.

Locals blame the authorities concerned for negligence and use of low quality construction materials for the sorry state of the new bridge.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, bus driver Saiful Islam expressed concern saying that accidents might occur if the authorities did not initiate repair work soon.

During a visit on Thursday, this correspondent found that the blocks of the guide walls of the approach road had been damaged – creating large holes – by rain in the last couple of days.

“We have noticed the potholes and the damage to the approach road. We are going to make permanent guide walls to prevent further collapse due to rain,” said SM Al Amin, deputy assistant engineer of Tangail Roads and Highways.
