A Narayanganj court on Monday placed Hefazat-e-Islam’s former joint secretary general Mamunul Haque on a fresh three-day remand in cases filed over the violence that ensued in Narayanganj during Hefazat’s countrywide hartal in late March.
Narayanganj Chief Judicial Magistrate Farhana Ferdous passed the order after the case investigation officer (IO) produced Mamunul before her court seeking seven days to question the top Hefazat leader.
Confirming the matter, Court Police Inspector Asaduzzaman said that Mamunul was produced in court over the recent acts of vandalism, arson, and sabotage perpetrated by Hefazat activists between Shimrail and Signboard areas of the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in Narayanganj.
Police had filed six cases over the incident of March 28. Of them, the investigation for one was transferred to the PBI on April 15.

Earlier on May 12, Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Humayun Kabir placed the Hefazat leader on a 15-day remand in connection with five cases.
Previously, Mamunul was arrested from Jamiya Rahmaniya Arabia Madrasa in the capital’s Mohammadpur area on April 18.
The controversial Hefazat leader has been under the spotlight since April 3 when he had been surrounded by locals and ruling party supporters with a woman, whom he had identified as his second wife, at Royal Resort in Sonargaon.
Local administration officials and police had gone to the resort upon hearing about the incident and sat with Mamunul to learn about the incident
Later, a group of Hefazat supporters ran riot in the area, over which a total of seven cases had been filed. Around 50 Hefazat leaders and activists have been arrested in the seven cases so far.
