A Chittagong court has remanded Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader and former MP Shahjahan Chowdhury who was arrested on charges of instigating the Hefazat-e-Islam violence in Chittagong’s Hathazari in March this year.
Chittagong Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahriar Iqbal granted a three-day remand period on Saturday, when police produced Shahjahan before the court with a remand prayer for five days.
Additional District Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Masum SM Rashidul Haque confirmed the matter to Bangla Tribune.
Earlier, the Jamaat leader was arrested from his Satkania upazila residence in the early hours of Saturday, Rashidul Haque told the media.
“We have evidence of Shahjahan’s involvement with the violence and vandalism done by Hefazat men on March 26 and 27 during the protests against Indian PM Modi's visit.
“He was arrested in the cases filed with the Hathazari police station,” said the Chittagong district police chief.

On March 26, at least four people were killed and several others were injured in clashes among Hefazat supporters, police, and ruling party activists in Chittagong.
Indian Prime Minister Narednra Modi was at that time in Dhaka on a two-day visit to join the celebrations of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence and the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Multiple cases were filed with different police stations of the port city following the unprecedented violence that took place during the anti-Modi protests.
