A 40-year-old man was beaten to death for speaking up against the harassment of his niece.
The incident took place on Saturday night in the char area of Rangpur's Pirgacha upazila.
To safeguard the identity of the victim the details about the deceased are not being disclosed at the moment.
Police have arrested one person suspecting his involvement in the incident, confirmed Pirgacha police station OC Abdul Aziz.
Police said a young man named Rezwan often harassed the sixth grader on her mobile phone. When the girl informed her relatives about the matter, they tried to identify the person through the phone number.
It became evident that Rezwan would often harass the girl by calling her mobile phone saying obscene things.
When the girl's uncle called Rezwan and forbade him to call his niece again, Rezwan threatened to harm him. On Saturday night, Rezwan and his accomplices found the uncle alone, on his way home from the market and attacked him, injuring him severely.
He was taken to Pirgacha upazila health complex and then to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he died on Sunday morning while undergoing treatment.
Pirgacha police station OC Abdul Aziz said one person has been arrested in the incident and they are trying to arrest the main accused Rezwan. The body of the deceased will be handed over to his relatives after autopsy.
The OC said preparations were underway to file a case in the incident.
