A young man sustained injuries in an attack carried out reportedly by his rivals in Kushtia for calling the police on them on the national emergency helpline number 999.
Following the incident, Jahangir Hossain, sub-inspector (SI) of Kuchiamora police camp of Bheramara police station, was withdrawn from his duties and attached to the district police lines on Sunday night for allegedly passing information to said criminals.
The incident occurred at Foyzullahpur village in Juniadah union under Bheramara upazila on Friday.
On Friday morning, Asadul Haque, a resident of Faizullapur village in Juniadah area of Kushtia's Bheramara upazila, called 999 after hearing gunshots in the Padma river area near his house.
From the emergency service, he was contacted by a duty officer of Bheramara police station. The duty officer then gave the name and mobile number of Asadul to Sub-Inspector Jahangir at Kuchiamora police camp.
Hours later, SI Jahangir called Asadul and said no such incident had occurred in the area.
But within half an hour of Jahangir's phone call, a number of youths wielding a pistol and sharp weapons stormed into Asadul's house and stabbed him indiscriminately.
The criminals also asked him how he dared to inform the police about their activities. They also threatened him and left.
Later, hearing Asadul's screams, some farmers working in a nearby field rushed and rescued him.
Asadul was admitted to Kushtia General Hospital on the same day.
On Saturday, he lodged a written complaint with the district police superintendent, mentioning the names of 7 people with details of the incident.
Confirming the matter to Dhaka Tribune, Bheramara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahjalal said: “A case has been filed with the police station and the accused SI closed in this regard. Police are looking into the matter.”
