Case filed over Awami League clash in Noakhali

Police on Wednesday filed a case over the clash between two factions of the Awami League at Basurhat in Noakhali’s Companiganj upazila.

Of the 346 accused, 96 were named, confirmed Companiganj police station Officer-in-Charge Meer Jahedul Haque Rony. However, he declined to reveal the identities of those named for the sake of investigation.

Twenty-eight people from both groups were detained after the clash and produced before the court. 

Additional police personnel were deployed in Basurhat to avert any untoward incident. 

The situation is calm now, police said.

A number of sharp weapons, believed to have been used in the clash, were recovered but no firearm was found.

Two factions of the Awami League clashed on Tuesday evening in which at least six men were shot. One of them, Alauddin Raihan, had died. He was buried on Wednesday afternoon at Char Kali village.

Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Companiganj unit Joint Convener Zakir Hossain Hridoy was shot in the eye and head during the clash.

He is being treated at a Dhaka hospital where he had undergone successful eye surgery.
