Feni fire: Woman, daughter die at Dhaka hospital

Two members of a family, who sustained severe burns in a fire at a residential building in Feni, have died at a hospital in Dhaka.

Hafsa Islam, 15, died at the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery while undergoing treatment around 12:30am on Thursday, said physician Partha Shankar Paul.

Earlier on Wednesday, her mother Meherunnesa, 38, wife of an expatriate, died during treatment at the same hospital.

On March 5, Meherunnesa, and her two daughters -- Farah Islam, 18, and Hafsa -- suffered burn injuries in the fire that broke out at their flat following an explosion.

The family was staying on the fourth floor of the six-storey Shafique Mansion on Shaheed Shahidullah Kaisar Road in the district town.

Feni's Superintendent of Police (SP) Khandaker Nurunnabi, while briefing the media on March 6, said: "The explosion occurred due to gas leakage. We suspect that sparks from an anti-mosquito racket caused the fire."

The trio was first admitted to the 250-bed General Hospital in Feni. Later, they were transferred to the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in the capital.

Meherunesa's elder daughter Farah was later released from the hospital as she sustained only 5% burns while the other two sustained 60% burns.
