A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) member was killed on Sunday when a truck – carrying marijuana – ran him over on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Bhaluka, Mymensingh.
The deceased is Idris Molla, 28, of Kellai village of Manikganj district. He was a RAB constable.
RAB-1 Director Lt Col Ashiq Billah confirmed the matter.
RAB learned from a secret source that a shipment of marijuana was going from Tongi to Mauna in Gazipur. Later, they set up a checkpost in front of Porabari RAB-1 camp in Gazipur.
During the search, when RAB signalled a suspected truck to stop, the driver tried to flee instead.
Constable Idris Molla and Senior Deputy Assistant Director (DAD) Golam Mostafa immediately started chasing the truck on a motorcycle.
After reaching Bagerbazar, a sack full of marijuana was thrown off from the back of the truck. Golam Mostafa got off the motorbike to rescue the sack full of drugs while Idris was still chasing the truck.
When the truck reached in front of the Coca-Cola Company in Bhaluka Seedstore area, Idris tried to barricade the truck with his motorbike.
The truck driver, instead of coming to a halt, ran over the motorbike, killing Idris on the spot, Bharadoba Highway police outpost in-charge Toimur Ali said.
The body of the deceased has been sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The truck was later seized from Bhaluka in Mymensingh while the driver and helper fled the scene.
