The heavy shower over the past two days has flooded the low-lying areas of Lama, Ali kadam and Naikhongchhari upazilas of Bandarban and some parts of Moulvibazar district.
Sources said the rise in Matamuhuri River water flooded the areas, leaving at least 30 thousand people stranded and snapping road connections. Besides, the rise of water level in the river of Sangu creates a bar to plying of tourists boat.
The flood-affected people are taking shelter on the hospital and school premises in the area with the apprehension of landslide, according to upazila administration sources.
Lama Upazila Chairman Thoainu Aung Chowdhury said all upazila chairmen have been asked to take the food victims to nearby shelter.
According to transport owners in the district, if the flood situation persists, it will inundate more new areas.
Lama Upazila Nirbahi Officer Khin Won Nu urged all to inform local mayor, commissioner, chairmen, newsmen and administration concerned of any unwanted situation in the wake of flood.
Our Moulvibazar correspondent adds: flood situation in the district remains unchanged, with around three lakh people marooned by water while water-borne diseases are on the rise.
According to sources in Kulaura Upazila Government Hospital in the district, children and the elderly are the most victims of diarrhoea and viral diseases. A total of 18 medical teams are working to treat the ailing people.
Our Sunamganj correspondent said the Surma River water is flowing over the danger level. The intermittent heavy rain over the past few days, plus the water flow down the hill contribute to the rise of water level.
According to the weather forecast center of Water Development Board, water level might increase in the next 24 hours.
