Madrasa teacher held for sexually harassing students in Comilla

Police have arrested a madrasa teacher on allegation of sexually harassing female students in Muradnagar upazila of Comilla.

Md Hasan, headmaster of Ummehani Mahila Madrasa, was apprehended from the institution on Saturday based on the complaints of the guardians, Muradnagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Sadekur Rahman said.

Meanwhile, students, guardians and locals also staged demonstrations demanding punishment of the madrasa teacher.

Earlier in 2019, Hasan, who established the madrasa, was sent to jail on charges of sexually harassing a 10-year-old student. Later on, he was released on bail after incarceration.

On Thursday, the madrasa students informed the other teachers about the issue of sexual harassment by the headmaster, locals said.

Based on the students' allegations, the teachers called a meeting on Saturday morning and promised to resolve the issue.

However, the headmaster locked the students in a room on Saturday before the other teachers arrived at the madrasa. The students started protesting the incident and managed to get out of the room later on.

As news of the incident spread, guardians and locals got enraged and staged demonstrations in front of the institution.

Being informed, police went to the spot and apprehended Hasan.

Teachers of the madrasa said students very often made allegations of sexual harassment against the headmaster.

Many of them were expelled from the institution later, they added.

Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Nur Azam of the police station said a guardian filed a case against Hasan on Saturday night.

"He will be produced before a court on Sunday," the ASI added.
