A child rapist has been sentenced to life imprisonment for violating a 13-year-old child in Rangpur, 12 long years after the incident.
Rangpur Women and Child Abuse Suppression Tribunal Judge Jabid Hossain handed down the verdict at 12:15pm on Sunday.
According to the case details, the convict Ainul Haque attacked and raped a 13-year-old girl at Binatari area of Rangpur city on March 10, 2009, when she went to a bamboo bush near his house to respond to nature's call at night.
Later, locals caught Ainul when heard the girl screaming for help. However, the convict’s family snatched him from the locals.
The child, who was left bleeding following the incident, was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Her father filed a case in this regard with Kotwali police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
Police filed the chargesheet in the case against the accused after completing the investigation. After the testimony of eight witnesses, the district judge convicted the rapist and sentenced him to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 25,000.
Advocate Rafiq Hasnain, who represented the state in the case, expressed satisfaction over the verdict. On the other hand, the lawyer of the accused Advocate Abdul Haque Pramanik said his client was denied justice and will appeal to the High Court.
