Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal has said that the law enforcement agencies should be stricter in curbing drug trafficking in the country as drugs are driving youths towards destruction.
He also mentioned that people involved in drug trafficking should be socially ostracized.
The home minister was speaking as the chief guest at a program organized at Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Cox’s Bazar Headquarter Training Ground on Wednesday.
Kamal said: “The development of the country will be hampered if those involved in drugs are not eradicated. Therefore, all those involved in drug trafficking should be brought under the purview of the law.”
"We have to win against drugs in the same way we have won against terrorism and militancy. Otherwise, the development of the country will be hampered,” he said.
At the event, drugs worth Tk535 crore, recovered at different times by the BGB in Cox's Bazar, were destroyed.
In the last two years, 17,775,625 pieces of yaba tablets, 5,699 bottles of liquor, 33,555 cans of beer, 1,638 litres of distilled liquor, 15.732 kg of cannabis, 18,650 strips of sedil tablets, and 5,000 strips of tableton were seized during the raid. All of them were destroyed at the event.
Benazir Ahmed, inspector general of police, Mostafa Kamal Uddin, senior secretary, Department of Public Security, Ministry of Home Affairs and Brigadier General Md Sajedur Rahman, commander, BGB Cox's Bazar region, were also present at the event.
