Unidentified miscreants have felled around 800 young mango trees on 20 bighas of land in Kharusha village under Jhikargachha upazila of Jessore.
Worth around Tk1 crore, the trees of the orchards, belonging to 20 farmers, were cut down indiscriminately in the dead of night on Wednesday.
Police, visiting the scene on Saturday, said they were considering the use of the latest technology available to them to apprehend the culprits.
Moudud Ahmed, one of the orchard owners, filed a complaint with police.
He said last year he had a bumper yield from his mango orchard by using a grafting technique whereby the plants would begin bearing fruit from the second year onward.
When contacted, Mizanur Rahman, in-charge of Shewardah Police camp in Jhikargachha, said: “We have visited the site. But none of the affected orchard owners could identify the perpetrators. We are now considering using the latest tracking technology available to us to catch the people responsible.”
