One killed in election violence in Jessore

 A youth has been killed in violence over Bagharpara upazila parishad chairman by-election in Jessore.

The deceased was identified as Khaledur Rahman Titu, 24, a supporter of Awami League-backed candidate Victoria Parvin.

Additional superintendent of Jessore police Jewel Imran said supporters of independent candidate Dilu Patwary attacked supporters of Victoria at Beltalpara Bazar under Johorpur union on Wednesday night. 

Khaledur was severely injured in the attack and was firstly taken to Jessore General Hospital.  The physicians of the hospital referred him to the DMCH in a critical condition. 

He was admitted to the DMCH Thursday morning where he succumbed to his injuries around 9am.

Police are conducting a drive to arrest those involved in the incident, Jewel added. 

Deputy Commissioner Tamizul Islam Khan said the by-election is underway today in a peaceful manner.

Superintendent of the district police Muhammad Ashraf Hossain said the law enforcers have been sincerely performing their duties to make sure the election is free and fair.
