Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has handed over Tk50,000 to the mother of Rayhan Ahmed, who was reportedly tortured and killed in custody by policemen at Bandar Bazar police outpost.
Superintendent of Police Farid Uddin handed over the money from the district Police Welfare Fund at his office on Sunday afternoon.
Rayhan’s mother expressed gratitude to the district police for arresting the prime accused, suspended Sub-Inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan.
Superintendent Farid Uddin also assured Rayhan’s mother of justice for her lost son and gave gifts to Rayhan’s children.
On October 11, Rayhan, 34, a resident of Akharia in Sylhet city, was beaten to death in police custody, according to his family.
His wife Tahmina Akter Tanni filed a case with Kotwali police station the following day, accusing a number of unidentified people.

Four policemen, including then in-charge of Bandarbazar Police outpost Sub-Inspector Akbar, were suspended on October 12. Three policemen were also withdrawn the same day.
The case was later transferred to the Police Bureau of Investigation.
In addition, the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) formed a committee to look into the death of Rayhan. After a primary investigation, it found some policemen guilty of foul play.
After the autopsy, doctors said there were 111 injury marks on Rayhan’s body and two of his nails had been pulled out.
On October 22, former SMP Commissioner Golam Kibria was transferred due to widespread criticism over the role of police in Rayhan’s death.
