Two journalists were assaulted and their cameras were broken in Meherpur, by several people, including District Social Services Deputy Director Abdul Quader.
The two journalists — Abu Akhter Karan, DBC News district correspondent, and Zakir Hossain, journalist at local online newspaper “bdreuters.com” — were attacked while they were carrying out their professional duties at the District Social Services Office on Sunday afternoon.
The assaulted journalists said they went to the social services office to collect news. After a while, Deputy Director Abdul Quader took them to a secret room and detained them.
“Then several people including Sajjad Hossain, the probation officer of the office, and Milon, Abdul Quader's personal driver, beat us up and broke our cameras,” they said.
Later, a team from Meherpur Sadar police station went to the spot and rescued the two journalists.
A case was filed against Abdul Quader, Sajjad Hossain, Milon Sheikh and several unnamed people with Meherpur Sadar police station in this connection.
Shah Dara Khan, the officer-in-charge of the police station, said further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
Meherpur Deputy Commissioner Dr Mansur Alam Khan on Sunday evening, said: “We have instructed Additional District Magistrate Tushar Kumar to probe the matter. Moreover, the matter was informed to the state minister for Public Administration, higher officials of social services and the divisional commissioner. Actions will be taken after the probe report is submitted."
