A three-member probe committee of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Bangladesh found no proof of Quran desecration, speculation of which led to the brutal murder of a man by an angry mob in Burimari union of Lalmonirhat's Patgram upazila.
The members of the probe committee are: Al Mahmud Faizul Kabir, the director of investigation at NHRC, Md Gazi Salauddin, deputy director of the NHRC, and Lalmonirhat district's Deputy Commissioner Ms Abu Zafor.
The director of investigation, Faizul, after his Sunday's visit at the incident spot told journalists: "We have found no proof of Quran desecration at the Burimari Central Jame Mosque. No one could provide any proof. We have talked to many people about it, need to talk more."
"A man has been murdered in a brutal way through the spreading of rumors. Such a brutality is one of a kind in Bangladesh. It's a matter of severe human rights violation," added Faizul.
"We have divided our investigation into three parts. Firstly, why the mob from Rangpur appeared at the crime scene and through where (in Lalmonirhat). Secondly, why the incident was not mediated at its beginning. Thirdly, who was responsible for spreading the rumors."
"Our investigation is still ongoing. We cannot disclose much for the sake of investigation," Faizul furthered, adding that the probe report will be submitted within seven working days since the committee was formed.
