The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs has annulled the freedom fighter certificate of Brahmanbaria district council (Zila Parishad) Chairman Shafiqul Alam.
A notification signed by Director General Md Zahurul Islam Rhohel on October 25 recommended to cancel freedom fighter certificates of 36 people including Shafiqul Islam.
In 2017, freedom fighters of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila started vetting the freedom fighter list, according to Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad Command.
However, Shafiqul Islam failed to produce the necessery documents to the concerned authorities despite repeated summons by the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO).
Later, Shafiqul appealed the matter to the Jatio Muktijoddha Council chairman in 2018.
Brahmanbaria Awami League General Secretary Al Mamun, also member of the district freedom fighter screening committee, said: “Brahmanbaria-3 MP R A M Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury was present during the hearing of Shafiqul Islam’s case at the begening of the year.”
According to local authorities, Shafiqul Islam failed to prove himself as a freedom fighter. Later during the 69th meeting of Jatio Muktijoddha Council, a decision was taken to cancel the freedom fighter certificates and gazettes of 36 people including Shafiqul Alam.
