A mobile court of the Chittagong district administration has fined 10 wholesalers of Chittagong’s Reazuddin Bazar area a total Tk1.4 lakh for selling potatoes at higher prices than that set by the government.
The wholesalers were selling potatoes at Tk42 per kg, when the Department of Agriculture Marketing has set wholesale prices at Tk30 per kg and retail prices at Tk35 per kg, according to Executive Magistrate Omar Faruk, who led the mobile court on Tuesday.
“The wholesalers were not even providing retailers with any documents. We will continue our market monitoring drives to keep the potato market stable,” the executive magistrate said.
Among the errant wholesalers, Ms Cumilla Traders, Rafraf Banijjalay, Ms Makka Banijjalay, Ms Mamun Traders, Ms Ma Bitan and Ms Kusumpura Banijjalay were each fined Tk20,000, Ms Janani Traders and Ms Daudkandi Banijjalay were each fined Tk 10,000, while New Rajmahal Banijjalay and Ms Ashish Laldhar and Brothers were fined Tk 5,000 each.
