Prisoner beaten to death by jail staff in Madaripur, claims family

The Madaripur District Jail authorities have been accused of beating a prisoner to death. 

The deceased was identified as Hazrat Matubbar, 50, son of Tafel Matubbar of Gachbari village under Madaripur Sadar upazila.

The prisoner died at the District Sadar Hospital at around 8am on Wednesday.

According to the Madaripur district jail authorities, Hazrat Matubbar was charged in two separate cases filed on July 19 and 22 at Sadar Model Police Station in connection with a clash in Gachbaria area of sadar upazila. 

Later on September 26, Hazrat Matubbar voluntarily appeared in court and the judge sentenced him to be sent to jail. 

Matubbor was admitted to the District Sadar Hospital when he suddenly fell ill on Wednesday dawn. He later died at around 8am while undergoing treatment.

His family members have alleged that he had been beaten to death.

Sajeda Begum, wife of the deceased Hazrat Matubbar, said, "My husband was healthy, I met him a few days ago. My husband was beaten to death by the prison authorities.”

Madaripur Sadar Hospital Residential Medical Officer (RMO) Dr Md Nurul Islam said no signs of injuries were found on the body of the deceased. 

An autopsy report has been sent to Dhaka. After receiving the report from Dhaka, it can be ascertained if it was a murder or a normal death.

Madaripur District Jail Superintendent Md Nazrul Islam denied the allegations and said that the detainee was admitted to the hospital immediately after he fell ill. Later, his heart stopped beating and he died. The body of the deceased has been kept in the morgue of Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
