A housewife, who was allegedly gang-raped by three people, tried to commit suicide in Mehendiganj upazila of Barisal on Monday.
Quoting locals, Sazzad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kazirhat police outpost in Mehendiganj, said the girl, aged about 17, got married three months ago and lived at her father's house in Andharmanik village of the upazila as her husband worked in the capital.
The housewife had an extramarital affair with one Babu of Hizla upazila.
On Sunday, Babu took the girl to his house where he along with his two friends raped the girl.
When the news came to light, local UP member Param Bhuiya arranged an arbitration where he asked the three culprits to provide Tk 20,000 as compensation to the housewife.
Failing to bear the humiliation, the rape survivor drank poison in a bid to kill herself.
Later, she was taken to Hizla Upazila Health Complex.
