Noakhali sexual assault: Hefazat-e-Islam demands exemplary punishment

Junaid Babunagari, secretary general of the radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam, has condemned the incident of the stripping and molestation of a housewife in Noakhali.

After issuing a media release on Monday, Babunagari also demanded bringing the culprits behind the horrific incident to justice and meting out the highest punishment to them.

Expressing grave concern over the alarming rise of rape incidents in recent times, Babunagari said that the incident beat the Ayame Jahiliah or the age of ignorance (pre-Islamic era).

“My heart bled after hearing of the incident. How could men become so brutal? We cannot sit idle after our sisters and mothers become victims of torture,” said Babunagari, who is also Chief Shaikul Hadith and Nazim-e-Talimat (director of education) of Hathazari Madrasa.

“One month has already gone by since the incident. However, the law enforcers of the country could not take any steps against the culprits. It is really regrettable,” said the Hefazat leader.

The local administration could not deny its irresponsibility for the incident, Babunagari said, adding that rape incidents had assumed epidemic proportions in the country as exemplary punishments had not been meted out to the accused in such cases.

Sounding a note of warning, Babunagari said that the whole country would erupt in raging protests if the culprits behind the incident were not arrested and maximum punishment was not meted out to them.
