High Court: No bar on holding O Level, A Level exams this year

The High Court has rejected a writ petition seeking stay order on O Level and A Level examinations in October and November this year.

The High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after hearing on the writ petition on Wednesday.

Following the court order, there is no legal bar to hold the exams this year.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Moniruzzaman Lincon stood for the writ.

Earlier on September 27, Advocate Lincon filed the writ petition on behalf of an A Level student, Tamanna Tabassum.

Secretary to the Ministry of Education, secretary and additional secretary of Higher Education Division, and Director (operation and examination) of British Council were made respondents in the writ petition.

On September 23, the Education Ministry gave its approval, with some conditions, to hold O Level and A Level examinations from October.

On September 20, British Council sent an application to the ministry asking for the examinations to be held under the UK boards, Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel.

A Level examinations under Cambridge International are scheduled to begin from October 1. On the other hand, the exams under Pearson Edexcel are scheduled to begin from October 5.

Edexcel’s O Level exams are scheduled to start from November 2 while the exams under Cambridge International are scheduled to start on November 5.

The petitioner also asked to formulate a policy for examinations, curricula, and overall management of English medium schools.
