Police have seized 29 sacks containing 870kg of rice, worth Tk10 each, of the government's food-friendly program from a house in Dhanbari upazila of Tangail.
The sacks of rice were seized from the house of Abdur Rahim, son of late Arfan Ali, in Kadamtali Bazar area under Birtara union of the upazila on Wednesday night.
Birtara Union Parishad (UP) Chairman Shafiqul Islam Shafi said: “Abdur Rahim caught the eyes of the locals while he was stocking the rice and they started asking him questions. When he failed to answer, the local administration was informed in the afternoon.
“On information, Birtara police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saikat Hasan with Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Saida Khanam conducted a drive and seized the sacks of rice. No one was there in the house when the drive was being conducted.”
Meanwhile Dhanbari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Arifa Siddiqa said: “As the road was bad, the sacks of rice were left in the custody of local UP member Shariful Islam. The sacks will be brought under the custody of the administration on Thursday and necessary steps will be taken.”
