Chhatra League attacks human chain protesting cases against former Ducsu VP Nur in Tangail

Members of Chhatra League’s Tangail unit reportedly attacked a human chain formed by the Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council.

The incident occurred before the Tangail Press Club at around 1pm on Tuesday when local leaders and activists of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council gathered to condemn the rape case filed against Nurul Haque Nur, former Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) vice president (VP), and five others.

According to witnesses, at least six people, including five Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council activists and a cameraperson of private television channel ATN Bangla, were injured in the attack led by Chhatra League.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, Md Alif, a leader of the Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council’s Tangail unit, said: “We organized a human chain program in front of the Tangail Press Club, protesting the false cases filed against the central leaders of our organization, including the Joint Convener of Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council Nurul Haque Nur. We also condemn the police attack on our people in Dhaka on Monday night.

“At one point, around 20 to 25 local Chhatra League men led by Tanvirul Hasan Himel, the organization’s district joint secretary, attacked us and our human chain.”

“At least five of our members were injured in the attack,” he added.

Contacted, Tangail Sadar Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC), Mir Mosharraf Hossain, claimed that he is yet to receive a complaint in this regard.

“But there were some confrontations that took place at the end of the human chain organized by Bangladesh Students’ Rights Council,” he said.
