Mizanur Rahman Molla, a resident of Chandpur’s Kuchua upazila, went to Malaysia with the hope of bringing his family out of poverty. But through the irony of fate, the expat has remained untraced for six months in Malaysia, much to the suffering of the poverty-stricken family.
Mizanur used to work at Kotraiya Bangla Market Keel Center in Malaysia.
According to family sources, Mizan first landed in Malaysia in 2009. After working there several years, he came back to Bangladesh to see his family in Chandpur in 2014.
After staying in Chandpur for several months, Mizan returned to Malaysia to join work.
However, Mizan spoke to his wife Honufa for the last time in March, and since then the family has been unable to establish contact with him.
Mizan’s wife Honufa said: “I haven’t been able to contact my husband for the last six months. He left the room where he used to stay. I spoke to my husband for the last time a few days before Ramadan. That time he told me his visa expired and that he applied for a new one.”
“My husband was trying to get his work permit renewed by a Malaysian. A few days ago, some papers arrived at his address, but my husband has remained missing. At this point, I request the government and Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia to look for him.”
“My two daughters were married off. And my only child studies in Madrasa. Only God knows how I am managing everything.” Hanufa lamented.
Mizan’ father Sultan Molla said: “I have strained every nerve to find my son’s whereabouts. I want to know where he is and how he is passing his days. I request the government to find my son alive.”
Expat Abul Kashem, one of Mizan’s acquaintances, said:”Two to three days ago before Mizan had gone missing, I collected 150 Malaysian ringgits from some Bangladeshi expats here and gave it to him. He sent 100 Malaysian ringgits to his family in Chandpur. Since then, he has remained missing. We do not know anything now about Mizan.”
Regarding the matter, Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Mazedur Rahman said: “His relatives have to contact the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment with some papers. We will try our best to help them; we will take necessary steps after contacting the embassy.”
