5 steel mill workers suffer burn injuries in Tongi

Five workers suffered burn injuries while melting iron at a steel mill in Tongi, Gazipur on Friday morning. 

The incident took place at around 4am on Friday morning at an SS Steel Mills Limited factory. The five workers were admitted to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).  

Mojammel, 22, and Dulal, 25, sustained 90% burn injuries while Niloy, 25, and Ripon, 30, sustained 50% burns. The fifth injured person, Azhar, 26, was released after primary treatment.

DMCH police outpost In-Charge, Md Bacchu Mia, said flakes from the fire suddenly hit the workers while they were melting iron. Their coworkers rushed them to Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi. They were later transferred to DMCH around 6am.  

Mizanur Rahman, firefighter of Tongi Fire Service, said no one informed them of the incident or called for help.

Tongi West police station Officer-in-Charge Emdad Hossain said: “Production work at the factory continues. The factory has provided helmets and physical security for workers. But we cannot say whether that is enough or not.

“If anyone complains on behalf of the injured, we will take action. However, police  did initially go to the factory with a general diary to check if there was proper security.”
