A Tangail court on Tuesday placed a college student on a one-day remand in a case filed for making derogatory remarks about Islam on social media.
Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Akramul Haque issued the order on Monday evening after police produced Srabon Haldar with a five-day remand prayer.
Speaking on the incident, Bhuapur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rashidul Islam said: “We are investigating the matter with utmost importance. Additional police have been deployed in the area to avoid an untoward situation.”
On Monday night, police arrested Srabon Haldar, a resident of Gobindashi village under Bhuapur upazila, from Sirajganj after he allegedly made derogatory remarks about Islam on Messenger.
Later Bhuapur’s Kukadair Jame Masjid imam Belal Hossain filed a case against Srabon under the Digital Security Act with Bhuapur police station.
Earlier, local Muslims in Gobindashi village vandalized Srabon's house after Srabon's friends spread the post on Facebook, sources said. Shortly before the attack, anticipating that such an incident might take place, Srabon's family left their house.
A chase and counter-chase took place between police and local Muslims when the law enforcers intervened to defuse the situation on the day.
The situation was brought under control after Tangail Additional Superintendent of Police Shafiqul Islam, Bhuapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nasrin Parvin, OC Rashidul and a few others went to the spot and assured the agitated people that the accused would be brought to book.
Denying the allegations, Srabon said he had made no such comments and his Facebook account might have been hacked.
