Case filed over murder of Kushtia MP’s cousin

A case has been filed over the murder of Awami League activist Hasinur Rahman, 52, cousin of Kushtia 1 (Daulatpur) MP AKM Sarwar Jahan.

Jubbar Ali, an eyewitness of the murder, filed the case accusing Mojibur Rahman Boyati, a key suspect, his son Jahangir, and four or five  unnamed people with the Daulatpur police station early Sunday, said the police station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nishikanto Roy.

“Mojibur has been produced before court on Sunday after primary interrogation. Police are trying to arrest others involved in the murder,” the official said.

“From interrogating Mojibur, all we could tell that the murder was committed over previous enmity. The incident is still under investigation. We can determine the exact reason behind the murder after that," the OC added.

Hasinur Rahman was hacked to death in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia Saturday morning.

In 2019, Mojibur's 15-year-old son Anwar was stabbed to death over a trifling matter, and shortly after the incident Mojibur lodged a case against a few at Daulatpur police station over the murder, found this correspondent after talking to locals.

According to police and locals Hasinur was active in Awami League politics for a long time and, on MP Sarwar's behalf, Hasinur was the in-charge of organizing party activities in Daulatpur.

Sources from police seeking anonymity said, as the individuals accused of the murder of Mojibur's son and Mojibur himself are supporters of Awami League, Hasinur had been trying very hard to settle the matter.

Hasinur put pressure on Mojibur to settle the murder and meetings were arranged twice with Mojibur and the accused in this regard.

Due to this Mojibur was very angry at Hasinur and killed him brutally upon getting the chance, sources said.

Following the murder, MP Sarwar rushed to his area and asked the law enforcers to see if there is any other reason behind Hasinur's murder.

A number of locals seeking anonymity said Hasinur was the leaseholder of the Padma River bank that falls under Filipnagar village. A fraction of local influentials have been sand lifting from the same area.

About a week ago Hasinur and his followers held a press conference against illegal sand lifting and Awami League has been divided into fractions in Daulatpur over establishing supremacy, added the locals.
