A case has been lodged against three policemen including suspended inspector Liakat Ali, former in-charge of Baharchhara investigation centre, on charge of extorting a businessman in Chittagong by threatening to kill him in crossfire.
The businessman, SM Jashim Uddin, filed the case on Wednesday with the court of Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Salem Mohammad Noman.
Jashim's counsel Jewel Das told Dhaka Tribune that the plaintiff submitted the complaint before the court accusing 13 people.
However, the court took the complaint of seven people including three policemen into cognizance and ordered the deputy commissioner in Chittagong Metropolitan Police's (CMP) Detective Branch to investigate the case.
The two other accused policemen are Daudkandi police station Sub-Inspector Md Hannan and Satkania police station Sub-Inspector Md Nazrul.
The three policemen were posted to the CMP during the incident.
The four other accused are SM Sahabuddin, Bishnupad Palit, Kajal Kanti Baidya, and Ziaur Rahman. All of them are businessmen based in Chittagong, according to the complaint.

Jashim lodged a case with the court over a theft incident in 2013. Liakat, then a sub inspector of DB, was assigned to investigate the case and took Tk50,000 from him.
On June 14, 2014, Liakat summoned the businessman to the DB office and offered him to negotiate with the defendant.
As the businessman declined the offer, Liakat threatened to kill him in crossfire if he did not pay Tk5 lakh.
Liakat Ali is also a prime accused in a case filed for killing Major (retired) Sinha Md Rashed Khan in Cox’s Bazar on July 31. He is currently being interrogated in RAB’s custody.
